I Am a Person

During Columbus Weekend  Indeginous People's Day a black student on campus was the victim of a hate crime. I have the wonderful unfortunate privilege of attending the University of Massachusetts- Amhert. Awesome really *rolls eyes*. In the wake of this, there was a meeting with the Chancellor last night and today a Town Hall meeting on the issue of diversity on campus.

I did not attend.

For this simple reason.

Spring semester, I wrote a glowing paper on W.E.B. Dubois and the honorary naming of the UMass library. You know what I realized, that white people are racist. White people will always be racist. They won't say it to your face, but they will be racist. 20 years ago, they printed it in the Minutemen. And you know what I realized now, white people in Massachusetts like to say racist shit behind your back. They'll never say it to your face. Because we're supposed to be the fun loving, liberal, immigrant accepting state. Bullshit.

I go to a white university. You don't think I'm not fully aware that someone white person on campus is not eyeing my afro wondering if I washed it, or if its clean. Or staring at my hair wondering why its red, and thinking that I'm ghetto. So please spare me with your bullshit in trying to placate my hurt feelings. Just do me a favor and have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to hate crimes. Don't try to patronize me, and say you feel hurt as well.
